Occupational Medicine
Alex Baskous, M.D., M.P.H
Board Certified in Occupational Medicine ABPM-OM
About fifteen years ago the only Board Certified Occupational Medicine Specialist in the state informed the medical community that she would be leaving Alaska. Dr. Baskous sensed this void would leave unanswered health and safety problems for Alaskan workers and employers and began the arduous process of qualifying for and taking the Board Certification exam which he subsequently successfully completed.
Occupational medicine is concerned with safety in the workplace and work related injury and illness. There are, in many cases, OSHA required periodic examinations and testing. Occupational medicine more than any other medical speciality is a team effort with the common goal of the good health of workers. The team players may include industrial hygienists, audiologists, pulmonologists, toxicologists, radiologists, physical therapists, safety engineers, ergonomics specialists and many others. A knowledge of the hazards of specific industries is essential. Also a sincere interest in improving health in the work place.
Occupational medicine requires specialized testing and equipment to be available for convenient use of workers Most necessary tests and procedures required can be done within Dr. Baskous office suite and the remainder within the adjacent hospital complex.
When involved with any aspect of occupational medicine, including periodic required exams, Dr. Baskous ”style” is to consider the individual as a whole person and take the opportunity to communicate concerns about general health and preventive medicine recommendations, rather than only the isolated work related question at hand.
